good afternoon thanks for coming everybody hello happy Friday I love that I get to say that every time we meet always bladder it sounds more exciting than happy Monday well we're supposed to love Mondays as much as again sorry for the confusion last week that was all on me I was going to have a brief meeting but I got swamped with paperwork at his my alert so I'm sorry if I left anybody waiting on that glad you're here now we have a few things to share will dive in quickly directions or anything before we get started make sure as always if you have questions this week I'll start this picture with just a couple of keeping issues we sent out an email today and I know that Administration sent out messages but to make sure that we're sharing as well there is a survey about returning back to school fight for your family if you haven't had a chance to fill that out please do it should be available through the illuminate family portal if you have any difficulty getting in to eliminate anything like that please check in with the office I'll be able to help you that way you can check students grades to so please if you have any trouble with the office us also but speaking for myself we don't know nor do we have access to Club code the logins and things for illuminate either so if you can please fill that out also Administration wanted us to share that because we started a little bit late school year we had to make some minor adjustments to the calendar we added to a synchronous learning days the board added to a synchronous learning days to our schedule for Monday and Tuesday of the weakest things exact dates on that I should have it down that would be 23 and 24 the short version is the 23rd and the 24th Will Be Independent Learning days similar to the way our Mondays have been structured the students will have their work will get them set up ahead of time so that they can move complete the X fries and we can all get credit for being active those two days but will be able to spread it around and meet Family schedule administrations where some families are planning for the entire week so we want to be flexible with that those are the two big things that I had written down there was something else we talked about don't forget him you were going to make science activity right I have going to pull up a slide real quick maybe yeah. Love you well I have 550 tabs open on exaggerating a little bit but if you have other things to say let me pull it back up while she's getting that I can say I did remember we talked I seriously just lose it okay well I can see that since you are what I was going to say was if you have not had a chance to pick up materials there are still materials available and the office for 5th grade students should have their Chasing Vermeer Book Students should have a math book module 3 and 4 if your student has tried to tell you that they can throw away their module 1 and 2 sure we are done with 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 3 + 4 is available up in the office digital copies on the website there is also a packet of materials and the social studies newspapers if you haven't had a chance to get to the office and pick those up I think they'll be there for another hour today and then we're going to have to write things I forget specially on Fridays just a reminder I go over this with the kids I was sitting Google Classroom posted on edlio kind of posted everywhere right now is more important than ever we are working on a novel study and if fall behind it makes it really difficult to understand the book we're working on a book that's a mystery and I'll go in a little more detail in just a second about it but our late work policy if design not necessarily to keep our life more organized the teachers that to keep the kids working on what is relevant if they have worked at that's assigned and dusse on Tuesday and they don't get around to it till Friday it becomes busy work so you know they're having. does potential information going back to find note it makes it more difficult on them and that is why we Implement a late work policy to get them ready for Middle School it's the same case in which we move at it becomes very gif call Dan overwhelming Should students all too far behind this is definitely all events well in all subject but an Ela right now working with the novel study so as a reminder there's a 1 day grace. So that reason I crave it everything a day late knowing that some teachers or some kids have things come up or not able to get something turned in that day that next day there's no race. And there's no point deduction after that it's 1.2. I remind them all the time there's no no celebration that happens across my computer screen letting me know that they turn something in late if they turn in something late they have to email me you're welcome to do it too but I really encourage it to Beaver that they email me and let me know that something has been turned in and what that way I know to I know to go back and I know to go back and braided otherwise going to sit there all assignments expire on Friday the novel study that we're working on I believe all but just two kids who picked up there but in the meantime there were there videos online to access some of the chapters it's really important that these kids carry these books around so if you are changing household or the kids have soccer practice on might have them read to and from soccer practice again it's really difficult fall behind doing a novel study this book is a mystery and it's meant to be really interactive it's a big reason why I chose I choose to do this at the first book of the year the kids really get involved there's Mysteries inside mystery stories inside worries on this particular butt and they miss out on a while if they are reading is too broken up to spread apart trying to cram a whole bunch in after few days of being miss the comprehension questions are truly one is helping them not only solve the mystery but show me the render standing of the book if they're died as to what they should be getting out of each of those chapters if you are I think it's a great book I think that probably you all enjoy it as well if you get a chance encourage your students to read aloud they're missing that fluency piece not being here in school and we're not able to read aloud everybody read aloud as often as I'd like and fluency is a very key art of comprar increasing comprehension so even if you don't have it haven't listened to the story from the beginning it's still a great read encourage them to read it out loud read a page out loud have them redo the family dog stuffed animal holder whatever it takes but really really encourage them to read out loud that fluency it's really important the comprehension questions we've talked in class and it's listed with an example on their comprehension question raid as in force and Beyond they will use the race strategy and the stands for restate the question answer all parts of the question cite text evidence and give an example that we work on all year long so they're introduced in for if we work on it all year infest they implemented hopefully seamlessly in 6th grade so you will see on the rubrics that are attached to the car tension question Tuesday the 1st is starting at chapter 3 I've added the correct answer in the rubric so if say your student gets question 1 wrong they get 0 out of 100 not understanding why they got it wrong we do go over the comprehension questions the next day in class but if for some reason they missed that or it's still not clear in the rubric it'll give them the correct answer so then they can kind of compare their answer to what the and hopefully figure out kind of what they missed obviously they can ask me if they still have questions then at the very end of the rubric there is two points available for McKenna and now that's not her question. overall for right now they should be riding with capitals answering in complete sentences even disregarding the race strategy and general right now I'll 5th graders we should be writing in complete sentences with a capital and a. correct spelling is important especially with spellcheck so as we move forward I will continue to hold them more and more accountable for their sentence structure in that kind of thing it is Ela our goal is to write in Ocoee step and well-developed sentences so the rubric does leave room for overall mechanic the individual questions are just graded on comprehension only I hope that makes sense materials for the novel study I have some really fun projects that we're going to work on that are involved in this novel study I want you to know that I promise you if your child comes to you and says mom is a Fisher said I have to go get chalk Stiles and 5 poster board I promise you I did not say that I will also often give them options or choices or ideas but what you have at home will always be fine open paper together to make your own poster board or making a book style project instead of a poster board any of those options are always 100% okay if we're doing something very specific that needs particular cereal will add them to you the material distribution when you come so please don't ever think that I'm asking you to go to the store on a Sunday night to spend $50 I promise you I'm not that means for science we have a couple fun things to talk about the first is I found a really fantastic relevant science project that we're going to do that works with the current Unit were on students are going to design and build a greenhouse now I can be honest and say that I've never done this particular one before I have a ton of resources we have material this will be something that we have that in from our them Cheerios to pass out before Thanksgiving break and I'm looking forward to help students kind of walked him through this please know that these assignments these big projects it's always have to work together if you to do this with your child they are not going to get marked down and it's not there were any writing that kind of thing absolutely is hopefully their ideas their work but any project that requires building assembling putting glitter play something you're welcome to do that with your student absolutely it's meant to be fun meant to be family or they can do it on their own at they're never going to be docked down because there's isn't put together if somebody whose dad is a woodworker so working together on projects materials anything that editorial test out otherwise please use what you have at home unless they can convince you to go to Michael that's that's up to you we are having a drive in Steam lab we're doing it doing it on the Friday before Thanksgiving break that day is a modified day so 11:45 would be our normal out time dismissal time 7-Eleven didn't that day will have quick resumes with mr. laundry and I in the morning to kind of recap basic subject or subjects and then at 11 we're hoping that you and your family or you can at least bring your 5th grader comes to find a parking spot going to ask you to stay in your car I'll be much more fun to get out and play but stay in your car and the slim and I and mr. laundry we have a couple of helpers will deliver to you tray like a tray like if we were at a lunch table with materials on it to create a turkey trap goal is and our hope is that you do it while you're in the parking lot and we have fun directions we have some silly things that that to do along the way with it when the kids are done they get to beep your horn and we're going to come over and take a picture they're going to show us how it works I'm excited to have the kids together but separated. if you have other siblings are welcome to come and help 5th grade make their turkey trap miss Lynn also has some ideas for putting together for the little ones that you might have so they have their own project their own things getting project to work on as well so I hope everybody can join us will be talking to the kids about it and I'll be on the newsletter that the 20th at 11 is a drive in Steam lab and in case you're not familiar with the Acura it's science technology engineering arts and math so it's going to be a lot of fun we hope to take some pictures and kind of get everybody together best we can before we head off for break that is all I have does anybody have questions that makes sense in my head but didn't make sense when I said it out loud I'll post all there is a couple of question sorry go ahead the other parent can go I just might send and at this Wednesday there's no school that was something I was supposed to write down Veterans Day is that is the 11th so we're going to make sure that there are no active just in case wide across can I do one of these yep know that was at I just want to make sure I'm careful and mrs. Fisher you tell me if I'm saying this incorrectly or if you disagree we are not planning anything specifically for the students to do on Wednesday since it is a national holiday there will be week-long activities just like normal if the students choose to do something on Wednesday because it works best with your family schedule they may have other activities to do but examples earn they should be able to get that done Monday Tuesday Thursday Friday there will be no XtraMath no video notes if they want to study for their math test they can mr. Fisher is that in line with what you were thinking to okay I thought so but second-guessing myself today yeah it is always strange when it falls right in the middle of a Wednesday off is what it what will do for the reminder thank you you're welcome thank you this is Hildebran did you have a question actually a cop or I'll try to make it quick mr. lingerie when you were sneaking phone completely shut it off so I can write as you were saying you're too big things one of them was asynchronous Monday and Tuesday of the week of Thanksgiving what was the other one cohort survey for families who are coming back what they may have already just another reminder on that you talked about in the past the were you give comments on works it's being done or comments and illuminate to the kids on their work I cannot find anything on Matthews I think I seen one comment all year or is he not getting them am I looking in the wrong I meant you're going to be on Google classroom and they are tied to each individual assignment let me bring up Matthew really quickly and let's see I will be honest I tried to give her a good job thumbs up but I am not always been about that is with students who need a little assistance so if she looking right now and I think if I want to make sure I'm making his privacy and they will pop up there you should also we have it set we finally we're taught how to share it via email so if I put a comment on there should know your email as well in fact maybe he's just not getting them and I know there was enough earlier this year that I reached out but we don't get notification on an app on the computer nothing my older son uses Google Classroom as well and all of the notifications every time he gets a new assignment anything and I don't know if the wave at tvcf has their email addresses set up but I don't get I don't get notification anything well I know that Mom had reached out to you and came of it well that's actually it wasn't you shoot for a while it was something that I did not know how to do from working parent we did get that handled and you should be seen comments now I know that some parents are I just went ahead and turned onto his test from today and just gave him a promise anyway and we can test and see if that comes through are you the settings are Omaha and let you know thank you the settings are on on this end I finally figured that out so it should be good double check the settings on your area if it's still not working we'll see if we get to the bottom of it should I reach out to you or to Heidi honestly at this point probably hiding but I don't mind cc'ing me on that I'd love to learn whatever she has to share hopefully you'll get there hopefully it's just a matter if he hasn't needed a whole lot of feedback so he hasn't at least enough for like when are you getting any kind of the rubrics that are posted in for his yellow refinement I think those are under in each assignment aren't they I feel like I said I don't I don't look at everything that he does, but I know I have seen where it says rubric are you coming wreck it depends if they need more specific feedback then what the rubric will give then yes otherwise it's the rubrics to each comprehension questions are individual Boy made because they go with whatever you know how many questions we have and to provide specific answers so they're not the same each time but aside from the rubric unless there were a pattern of or a reminder of not receiving the question or citing text evidence probably the rubric is the most amount of feedback they'll get especially if they're getting full credit regularly okay okay I just sent him attach things and I feel like it's goes out into the world but unless I hear differently I assume that it is connecting to everybody well I will check and see if I see any notifications for your comment mr. laundry and see what goes from there I love it with Elder Sign every single thing that goes in ICU at Charter I don't get anything so sometimes I have no idea how to appreciate that one questions are to take up so much time I know you have to talk to the past about office hours what are your general office hours and policies for answering emails office hours are available pretty much from anytime from 1:30 to the music 3 or 3 30 we don't sit in the zoom meetings anymore I've said in the past that was causing the slow my computer down a little bit when I was trying to be great in bed but I'm still at my computer and still at my desk so if a student requests Assistance or help via email I will answer now General an email usually if it comes after 3:30 I may not always get to it since that's what I'm heading home to check in on my kids but I do try to make sure that between the hours of a say 8 and 3:30 on Friday and quickly as I can so sometimes it does so I apologize if you say anything I haven't gotten a response but I do the best I can between those hours and mrs. Fisher and so if they have a question that requires video conferencing they want to share their screen 11 to 11:45 is the best time to do that not necessarily for me but kind of seemed to be still in that mind frame I'm also doing a lot of independent testing with students at that time so if they requested to do like on-the-spot I may not be able to accommodate because I'm already doing something that requires privacy between me and another so for that an email is great I do remind them that questionnaire questions in Google Classroom is a great idea if it's a general question because that way other men and answer their questions as well you know we didn't we in the beginning we had office hours where I would sit on zoom and wait for anybody to come because questions are specific to grades or I'm doing some kind of fluency testing or something where I can't have other people join us zooms during those times are kind of more by either appointment the kids need a tour request by me if I'm reaching out for something specific but then same after our last class at 1:30 you know mr. laundry and I go into grading mode and we check email sign off the time I always find out gender finish my planning for the next night and I I don't mind returning emails in the evening so I hope that answers your question perfect thank you is there something specific we missed no I'm I was just more Curious sometimes it seems like we are waiting a couple days for answers on things I've noticed that or we don't get an answer and I know Matthew and said he's posted a couple times play Private comments that go unnoticed in so that it makes me wonder all so then if maybe something is off on our end on Google classroom or something like that so that's all the answer specifically I do know that at time set if it's a question about something kind of in general that then is answered you know to everybody then you know we may not answer those specific email but if those are coming through or not getting I'm definitely you know how brickheadz asked in the chat in class or even you know ask him class for sure I don't want questions answered so they're all going to bring their questions to the classroom is IDL apologize and I'm sorry for cutting in but actually I'm checking now and I can see where a few comment Google Classroom again I don't know how it works on the student but I can bring up a list of all of his assignments and I'll even show me a little boys bubble like a comic strip voice bubble next anytime the comments have left have been left excuse me I don't see any spot where she so I am a little concerned now he's trying to contact us this way know he talked to me on October 20th he left me in that argues let me actually I can yeah he feels like he's leaving comments for us they're not showing up on this end okay maybe I'll reach out to Heidi and see if we can get it figured out then as I'm scrolling back through and we responded to those that anything out Matthew asked me about Vern back October 15th and I responded to him but otherwise that's it so yeah he's checking with Heidi if there's something missing great thank you thank you have a good weekend does anyone else have any questions everything else we can help you with did I have a question I was looking at Olivia's so basically her Ela I was looking at her chapter one and two and then you would email me back that it was in the rear brake but when I look at the river it's just empty I don't know give her more help with her answers she really has a lot of struggle comprehension and even though she reads Non-Stop yeah absolutely and I hope you know that we can do that together and she's giving that feedback in class as well for chapters one and two the rubric didn't offer the answers we went over them in class a couple times so that any discrepancy or questions should have been addressed in class as we went over those questions together and starting in chapter 3 although we do the overall the comprehension questions the next day in we go over them quickly and so that's why the rubrics should have starting in chapter 3 the answer so if you click on like question 1 if this dude got your a lot of one and you click on it it's tell you what the correct answer is and then they can compare you know what it was chapter 3 specifically that number one if I'm remembering right was asking the similarities and differences between the two carat main characters families and a common mistake as students were giving an answer of the similarities between the two families and forgetting the differences I did not mark off for you know in complete sentences or anything like that and tell them and I took off half a point if it was a consistent on all no questions but most likely it would be an incorrect answer so please let me know if it's not showing up on chapter 3 and Beyond chapter one we went over and two so thoroughly in class together because I more importantly than their grade I wanted to make sure they understood the basic the basis of the book help with you know comprehension for the whole thing I was just trying to help her cuz she got a 60% and I thought she had done pretty well on it but I haven't to be honest this is what's Olivia's having such a hard time she is deleting Her Go classroom whenever she feels like it so right now I can't even look at it as deleted herself from the school I was reviewing it and I I noticed that she didn't answer it with the RAC and I'm like live let's do this again on submit it so she and submitted it yesterday. Really frustrated with it then never resubmitted it so now you have it nothing I admit it again even though she did not answer it correctly at this point but I'm just like dealing with so much with this situation I don't even know what to do I can't even get into her classroom now I'm so sorry I really do that she's like locking her parents. I think is what she self out either she's deleted for sale so anyway I'm trying to get her grades up and trying to help her focus on important stuff but what her yeah yeah I need some improvements I feel like I've been watching her like a hawk I just hope someday she doesn't like that you know yeah well yeah I do can say am I it's okay to say it in front of other parents as well that she has really increased participation she just she said she's working hard in class but if you're if you're disenrolling yourself from Google Classroom that makes it difficult to access a question you know and I have no for like two days her stuff going to be missing I'm going to try to catch her up as best I can but well and maybe in a reminder to that it's it's certainly about the work and and a grade but especially right now with a novel study if she falls behind it's going to be a really challenging difficult Almost Boring next you know weeks as we continue with the book because you know there's so much that happens in this book that to not you know really kind of commit and engage in these you know beginning chapters you really miss the opportunity I understand the book in its entirety so becomes almost like as a domino effect so you know it send me an email if you know we're having she's having a difficult time completing question you know where there's ways that things that week did help support her in that but really just encouraged her to keep reading that's going to be essential otherwise she'll really tune out if the book starts not making sense cuz she skip it's not reading the basic issue special case but we're here at the Brookside X I don't even know like crazy yeah I know I don't know what her issue is with comprehension and I've been struggling with how to help her because I don't really understand this you I'm not a teacher how ghastly can I interrupt for just a moment and I apologize I don't I wouldn't I feel like maybe the three of us should talk a little bit more but I will also want to make sure that we're being respectful that one privacy and everyone's time because I think mrs. Fisher I have probably shared what we plan to share so you're probably good if everybody's ready to go but if you does anyone have any other questions or any help you can help you with I have a quick question so I'm the I'm going to admit on my own I kind of let Parker do his thing he does pretty well staying organized in and on it and so I put them on the back burner which I know and I know I shouldn't so I'm just now trying to look at the rubric that everyone's talking about in the ELA homework it's being talked about and I just want to make sure I'm understanding so this is what I meant in the questions he needs to answer he'll open the Google Docs and answer the question they are formed but there should be answers on are in the rubric if he needed to go back and compare rubric will be in the correct answers will be who played after it's graded so he'll open up that each student has their own copy almost like if I pass it out to them in class each student has their own copy so the directions and examples are on that document and there how to write write on there when they're done answering they turn it in and that's when then the rubric will show up with when I when I grade it I assign a grade question and then at the correct answer will be you know be available okay I asked Parker to bring me his computer so I can look at this and kind of get an idea of what was being talked about since I wasn't familiar with it and I saw one from November 4th and it didn't have any answers on the rubric so I thought I misunderstood that makes sense if it hasn't been graded yet then those answers will be there okay tractor not correct because we spent so much time how much doing a master class but chapters 3 and Beyond will have correct answers in the rubric on it as much as I should be with him so I took that opportunity when I was like wait a minute I don't know what's being talked about I need research so thank you for answering my question perfect thank you so much you're welcome any other questions okay I will most last time I tried it didn't work properly but I will try to post a recording of your seeing if you need to go back through anything as always if you have any other questions please email us let us know we'll get back to you on those as soon as you possibly can go ahead and end the official meeting for right now so everyone have a great weekend thank you very much again for being here
