thank you for being here today thank you for waiting you good to see everybody hope everybody had a good break hopefully possibly good to see everybody I'd say all three of you probably another fairly short meeting today mrs. Fisher had some things to share I've got just a couple quick things I'll show but to start does anyone have any questions anything in particular they want to address before we begin hopefully everybody had a restful New Year break and enjoyed kind of regrouping the kids were very excited and guns oh and brought there a games on the Tuesday and I think by today I needed to have maybe choreograph to cheer or dance something to keep their interest I said oh no friends it's only Friday the 1st back I was pulling out a video we were doing Paradox interactive and like I need to keep these kids going and we were sharing and yeah I think by this afternoon and they were all done with whatever we we had to bring his first week back this weekend we're all kind of readjusting fact all right mr. laundry did you want to go first you want me to I'll go ahead and start again I'm going to try to be really fast because it's nothing particularly new let me see if they'll share properly refill this week was students I tried to start by just really restating and clarifying what the expectations for students are going to be I made some very slight I hope they're small adjustments but nothing really gigantic we knew gemzar still responds for XtraMath every day Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday that they are in school I used to required on Fridays but then I gave them some Friday's off for tests and it just it was inconsistent and confusing so Monday Tuesday Wednesday now obviously this Monday there was no school so I'm not going to require Donna no school day Martin Luther King jr. Day is coming up in a couple weeks I won't require it then but otherwise Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday about Friday just those three video notes same thing although some Fridays and I wonder if I said someone if I said most there will occasionally video notes on Fridays but they should still expect every other day always Monday always Tuesday Wednesday Thursday the only time that I'll changes if I give them a study guide to work on so again hopefully nothing new test every two to three weeks I'll jump down to that one is that is also about the same their first math test of semester 2 will be January 22nd so two weeks from today not next Friday the 15th but the Friday after that the 22nd the big new thing for math is Freckle I am trying really hard to find something that is going to give them targeted practice let them practice at the level that they are at I have to go to the standards I have to go through the book have two presents this this and this but I know some of the students I'm going through slowly some of the students I'm going to quickly Zurn was supposed to be that kind of guided practice or directed targeted practice either I wasn't used correctly or something if it didn't seem to work so I'm going to try this instead nothing real formal yet just during class I'm giving them time to login it's a little more fun than get to pick a silly car Tune character Avatar and as they do practice they earn points to buy clothes and cookie stuff for it so I'm hoping that'll get them a little more engaged we did it I think just once this week we'll do it a couple more times next week no homework on this yet if that changes I'll make a big stinky deal to them and I'll let everybody at home no to I'll send that to the adults also to families to but for right now just a little practice turn Zoom social studies is pretty much for the same comprehension question they should have one question to answer Monday Tuesday Wednesday crossword puzzle on Thursday and then they're quiz every Friday they just took one today so I'm going through and gravy but I just wanted start the new semester by restating this and making I hope as clear and straightforward as I can this even have any questions or concerns anything about this look newer weird all right Ben that's pretty much all I've got for right now for the time being is pretty much going to be business as normal I don't want to shake things up too much if anybody has any questions let me know obviously freezing email or whatever's convenient but that's all I got so I'm going to turn this off and let mrs. Fisher share what she has for today did something similar on Tuesday on our first day back create a kahoot game for the kids to just remind them of expectations procedures that was only two weeks off it's amazing how much we need to remind her when we get back truly every year regardless of foreign class or not reviewed basic expectations of when work is due where to find your work what to do if your Pap said all of those basic procedures that we started with at the beginning of the year Mr laundry and I went through them and and we're confident obviously keeping them the same for lots of reasons we figure less changes best at this time there is no set date on going back so we are proceeding again with anticipation that this could change but our skin everything from our schedule to our expectations to procedures are the same from per semester report cards are finished first semester one eye need mr. laundry I'll have to ask your help in hiding it so I know if you can't I put information in or grades in for a semester 2 but it's showing up on semester so you know having questions about that I told them just pulled off that semester 1 braebrook will disappear after today all the way and that way when they do go to check their grades and I'll just show semester to so clear itself up when they don't see both at the same time report cards were waiting from Administration to find out how they're wanting us to deliver them I anticipate email but I don't know for sure they've still bridge that they've used with their report card should be available on Monday January 11th and again will I'm I'm assuming the best way to get those two everybody is through email we are asking this will be a Google document that students will log into with you that we've tried to make it you know interactive in a way that the ideas that after you receive your student report cards that you review it with them that the conversation you're celebrating things that went well having a conversation of maybe things that didn't go well and making a plan on things to change goals to to create to to change some of those things to improve your signature which is really just you riding it and then returning it back to us just to ensure our communication and we want to make sure I know that you all will but celebrate their hard work and then truly me. have them create some plans of a different plan of attack if there's something that wasn't maybe their best work as you know we finished our first novel study and Ela and we're going to start another novel study in the means I'm still need to choose a choice book as many books as I have in mind that I would like to read them I do want to give them a choice some of them have been so excited to show me their stack of books they got for Christmas that makes mighty your heart pitter-patter they have several options on how to get a book unfortunately the ones that I can offer are online through epic and the good news is that it offers a lot of titles still not some of my favorite however it means them more can computer time so I apologize I know who you're talking about offering books as far as provided by the school epic is still going to be the best bet as far as providing no-cost books but this might be a good point to mention I miss Julie has sent out that we are going to be having an online book fair next week well so if anyone is looking to purchase a new book which obviously is not required we have the free option mrs. Fisher mention but if you're looking into purchasing a book on my push the book fair since I we're going to go on a virtual book fair to are usually missed your laundry and I are so excited to walk the kids we sign up and walk the kids to the book fair they have a wishlist they come home with you and all these books and that's really exciting and they get to their money and go buy them unfortunately since we can't do that or we'll go on I like a virtual trip talk about some titles hopefully get them really excited but obviously Amazon Target again it is I'm so sorry that were at the point where we we have to ask for you to buy books if there's any possibility of us getting some books available during a material pick up I just can't quite wrap my head around how that would work so you know of a book of their choosing again the book fair is a fantastic place this is heinrichs work so hard to have all the best title but ordering through Amazon next time you're at Target or I have Papa double-check either I have or will be putting posting a list of popular titles on my book I'm on my website and Google Classroom some of the students have already started let's see which one did the Wright brothers I think was a big popular when it's a sequel to Chasing Vermeer the same author so if the kids were excited about Chasing Vermeer there's other book from that author that include the same characters that be a good option but keeping them reading and not only that I know I put in the bottom of the newsletter every week but getting the kids to read out loud if they're reading out loud to you to practice fluency I told them reaching your dog I've met all your dogs and guinea pigs and lizards and they all seem like they'd be really interested in hearing a good book reads A siblings that that piece of reading out loud and fluency that were missing right now just absolutely breaking my heart when I do I try to get the kids to read as much as possible and it is such an important piece in a really enjoyable you know part tell it to learning and practicing fluency so anytime you know you find yourself with a few extra minutes asking the kids to read aloud to you would be absolutely Priceless and love the emails I shed a few tears I had Parents emailing saying that they ended up reading Chasing Vermeer wild with her kids that I thought in my ideal world that's what that's we all have time to do that to get our favorite blanket sit on the couch with the kids and and read out loud are never too old for that so encourage them even if they're reading weather stuffed animal reading out loud practicing math fluency is so so so important I'd like them to have a book by next Friday there's some activities that I'd like to start however with a book sir mr. laundry Olney black unless you happen to know off the top of your head when that is starting did mrs. heinrichs mention that I don't want to put you on the spot I don't want to have an open that's okay I'm going to bring up the calendar started on Monday but I could be making that up I'm sorry that was my fault I apologize I when I read Miss heinrichs email today it wasn't all sorts of confused but the school calendar is saying the twin 25th February 7th yeah I was confused I apologize I don't want to cause a big problem for everybody I was mistaken yeah then we just get two or three bucks we get a book now and then we get one from the book fair to buy just want to make sure the kids are reading the next topic the late work policy will keep that the same as semester one I don't I won't bring up my fancy slide that explains it but you know in a nutshell any work that is assigned as do that same day by the end of the day if it's turned in the following day it's accepted with no penalty all work expires on Friday at the it's really important especially in ela because when I start grading and returning the work I attached a rubric with the answers on it so they have are able to see the correct answers and you know reference what they wrote versus what I was what I was hoping for so once the answers are out there it becomes a little bit difficult to accept late work past the end of the we obviously have some sticker you're gone please let me know and we can make adjustments couple more talking points the kids are cameras are being turned off again during 0% of your children but just as reminder we're reminding them constantly of the reasons why to keep cameras on it increases participation if their cameras are off their much more likely to want to do something else than what we're actually doing I've let them know that if it happens continually I'll email email parents asking you know is there a text you that we can help with more than again it's not talking to you all specifically but more than you know there's so much Tech issue going on it's amazing how kids you know claimed that cameras are broken or Wi-Fi is being really glitchy that day and certainly those things happen but it is really important for them to feel inclusive and part of the to have their cameras on Ela is the same about science and Ela is the same as far as independent homework goes as it's been all year students will have Ela by state I'm always posted in Google classroom and science names will have exit tickets which is their independent work 3 days a week one of those thing I wanted to mention I am so impressed with the the level work the kids are doing on their projects during science they are excited they're thorough fishing to be having a lot of fun and to me it's been much more valuable presentation of their understanding and their learn it's been a test would be because even though in my mind they're taking a test they're not looking up answers on Google because they're looking carefully at their note that they wrote it really does become more of a test of either what day does memorized or what they're able to seek the answers to so for that reason I anticipate continuing doing projects instead of a whole lot of tests for science I do need to check their understanding and I do that Jonathan with these exit tickets they become like mini mini quizzes so to speak but I anticipate continuing to assign project the kids have showed me that they're so thorough that there is in my opinion more going on in that then through tests for science the only small change that I'm implementing an Ela is I know mr. laundry and I both definitely missed the extra writing time that we used to have in our 4 days a week 5th grade had 45 to 50 minutes dedicated chest for grammar and formal writing and boy that time as missed now our schedule is chopped up and just for subjects instead of that v in middle school right formal writing and Ela are smushed together into one subject now that's not to say that we don't do a whole lot of writing in ela I can just picture the kids hands being raised right now what mrs. Fisher we write all the time yes they do constructive reading responses in ela when I say formal writing or talking about that end of your standard of a five paragraph essay I know I really miss teacher formal writing I think the kids have so much to learn and benefit from it's a timing thing we're going to take a couple weeks out of our regularly scheduled programming for ELA and do some formal writing hey I hope it's fun for the kids I can tell you that writing becomes frustrating sometimes for them probably even more so that I'm not there to do small groups and support the way I used to but we are going to take a break here at the end of January for my regular Ela time and it's going to be quite a bit of writing so I'll make sure that's included in the newsletter if they seem a little extra frustrated it's because they're working the writing process but very important that I prepare them for Middle School and that's all I have at the top of my mind are there any specific question for ELA I have a quick question. Just to clarify the choice books it can be anything that they or want to read anything just too much as it's pretty much a book in front of them cracked about how to choose a book that's just right for you I don't know these kids like I would if we were in school and I want them to choose a book I prefer that we're not all reading diary of the wimpy kid I think probably most of us are beyond that however reading is to me reading something is more important than not reading anything I wholeheartedly believe that I could hook every single 5th grader into books if given the chance there's a right for all of them and unfortunately I don't have that pleasure of spending time and connecting with him like that but I do have a short PowerPoint presentation a little video that give them some I like Recaps of books hope restart some spark some interest and gifts and curious about it so hopefully they will come to you wanting a book besides the diary books however I'll take it I do think though there's some great topics that I found that they seem very interested in mystery books so I really felt a suggestion on mystery I think they've they've realized how that can be fun but yes any book well do I'm truly going to Advocate that they choose books that are stimulating an interesting and we can do some deeper level thinking with fabric isn't great but perfect thank you for answering that yes any other questions I do want to encourage one other thing and I'll make sure I send this out of email I know that that kids have a different how am I say level of expiration for lack of better words they're tiring easier do you know we're not at school where we're on the computer so I would really encourage that they have that physical Book 2 to read versus accessing something online they also do if you are interested there are many books that have read out read aloud and if they want to listen to a book as a reading it absolutely that's fine if it's a difference between them doing any kind of reading at night and not following along in a book rocket being read aloud to them is a great resource you are also are welcome to read aloud if they are petering out and there's pages that need to be read that night if you want to sit down and read to your student I'm perfectly okay with that we're going to make adjustments and keep their interest high and not let them get to that frustrated heart Weatherford out because reading is fun thank you all again for coming this afternoon I know which already asked anything else we can do for you and your questions today I think that's all we've got right thank you all for your support I know this continues to be stop may be the perfect situation but I hope it's clear I hope the kids feel are starting to feel more connected we adore them I was so excited for Tuesday to see everybody everybody looks happy and healthy so good news thank you all again for being here this afternoon have a great weekend and make sure you let us know if questions or concerns thank you
