thank you all for coming good afternoon tomorrow afternoon let me see everybody sorry for the confusion this week will try to answer some questions and and play what we know probably not much more than you at this point sorry for the confusion and for the frustration that Fishers coming in which the moment see if any other families come here we go we'll record this also this is being recorded so it'll go up on our website for you think you missed it just probably another minute or so Huntsville right now most people are here I will say that as far as and mrs. Fisher cut me off as far as content for handling those things I'm pretty sure nothing is really changing in the next few weeks we shared a document with students and with a lot of families about just what the expectations are as far as how often tests are coming with their homework looks like I don't anticipate any of that is going to change and we hear something else but if you did not get a copy of that if you'd like to see what those expectations are let me spend bring up documents what is this one right here Becca regardless of whatever else happens we don't really have any plans on changing this I got my suspicions will jump in and tell me if I'm wrong but the routines that students are used to routines that students are used to as far as the four core subjects and what is required we're not going to change that there's always some minor flexibility from week to week but for the most part was keeping this locked in I want to have any questions just on General homework test schedules things like that before we start I'll clarify just hi everyone it's nice to see you just to clarify a little bit it's not a whole lot of changes here so you're not worried about comparing what you know maybe we laid out for first semester vs. second semester the few changes that are science and they are relevant because it's you know as we're continuing distance learning you know maybe a little long definitely more long-term than any of us was hoping for to record or give authentic assessment proves difficult so free independent work in ela is similar to any kind of assessment still them doing their own work doing their best work you know whether you can recall it independent work or an assessment I guess really big difference would be an assessment usually covers a little bit more than their independent work but really that's the only change I still anticipate for science doing more projects and take quizzes and tests I think you know the kids have did phenomenal their presentations and their projects for science were so impressive and the feedback I got from them is that they enjoy doing it they clearly spent more time with an effort their projects and they would have studying or memorizing for a test and because I can't you know create activities and small group things and we know is as relevant as I could while we were in class I think that the projects are better substitution but nonetheless I still need to do a few quizzes so we won't have them regularly but I do look forward to sharing the projects for the semester with students I hope that that clarifies it a bit of the grade weight not a whole lot of change just hopefully that clarifies a little bit and scan for Math and social studies on I am a creature of habit so I'm trying to keep it a similar to semester one is possible we cut out XtraMath on Fridays I'm not going to give that students on Fridays I'll still have extra math Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday again at this point all students should be working on vacation in six seconds or if they've already passed that they may be doing Division and 6 seconds they might even be back in addition but they're being asked to do it in half the time so for the most part everybody has moved forward video notes Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday xand most Fridays this week was a test week so that is an exception test weeks are going to be a little weird because we focus more on the study guide social studies comprehension Monday Tuesday Wednesday crossword puzzle on Thursdays the review activity essentially study guide for their quiz which they have every Friday there's just once a day I don't know why it's just testing study guide that's for men I'll go in and delete that that's extra okay yeah and wanted to get out of the way because my guess is that's probably not what most of us are here to ask about any questions on this Ed real quick I know that probably there's more questions about the upcoming schedule changes but I did want to double-check that there were no questions the kids were able to easily you know respond when clarifying when Ela and science is done as well I think both mr. laundry and I kept the same from first semester science and a short recap is Monday Wednesday Friday as far as work independent work that needs to be done so hopefully that is routine and then Ela is Monday through Friday there's a short activity or dependent work each day of week when we start our novel study here in well in about three weeks their work will mostly be a their silent reading their book that we do with a novel study similar to that what we did was Chasing Vermeer however there will also be writing activities and discussion questions that goes but I anticipate keeping it a very similar if not the exact same routine as we had first semester no questions not what you just showed what you were showing us it's probably out there for that why would I find that where can I print that out let me double-check to make sure it's worth supposed to be before I promise we sent a copy home but it's if we didn't if that was one of those I went to and didn't it should be under resources on Google classroom empty realists tune on my schedule right now under class resources I thought it was there I'm not seeing it immediately so I'm just going to put it up here so we'll make sure that it's that thank you so I'm doing that and while we do that any other questions and we'll get to the exciting stuff hurry old Led Balloon this week one of the things that gray levels were asked to do is take a look at our schedule and make sure that we were meeting certain instructional minute requirements fifth grade again in our excitement to do that we crafted a schedule based on what we thought Administration was asking for only sent it to everyone we sent it out too soon Administration is going to review that and see if it's an appropriate change if it's a necessary change we and again this is Fisher please tell me if I'm misrepresenting us we did not necessarily ask these extra 15 minutes a day I think that we've kind of found our groove most families against we reached out to last semester we sent out surveys we understand that for many families what we're asking is a big ask already 5 but we're waiting how to build on that when they when they asked us to please add the minimum of 45 minutes for ELA and science I'm sorry for science and social studies each day of the week just to put you at ease and the kids a little bit today and the anticipation or because mr. laundry and I both agree that you know we are in a Groove the kids are you know at their maximum and you know they're performing well we don't want a big change for them to do you mean I can talk till 7 at night but I do understand that I think that what we're currently doing is you know after limit so if in fact it does come bats that were asked to add that additional time for science fair example I anticipate using that additional 15 minutes to help support the kids doing their independent work so while they may be on Zoom a bit longer if that's what it comes down to the masking of us does it will be me helping the students get started on their homework so it'll be hopefully it takes away then that time as well so we're not adding anything to their days social studies but I'm asking them to do independently they would out of independently in a zoom where they can ask me for help or I could take the opportunity put them break out rooms let them work as a team it wouldn't be adding Ottumwa material hopefully that puts a few more at ease but given all of that does anyone have any questions or we're recording this meeting so that we can share with parents weren't here does anyone have questions or other concerns that they wanted to to bring to us right now I'm just curious why Administration those passes to be longer what was their reasoning behind it what do they think it's supposed to accomplish I think mr. laundry said it while I wish I had your answer for you and that we probably at you. Turns out we jumped the gun at this point we don't know what we do know is that there are working hard to read look at Virtua and just as learning you know it's gone on longer than you know I anybody anticipated so I think in their commitment to ensure that what we are doing can sustain you know as long as possible and be the most beneficial as possible I think that they've really looked at what we're currently doing and just trying to decide if you know where we're meeting the needs in the best way possible that wasn't a fancy way of saying I don't know but we're not quite sure yet so we'll wait until you know they say give us the final word on what our timing should be and will certainly pass that information along as soon as we know it although it does also sound like mr. neuenschwander was going to share the information with families as an entire school so it's not just 5th grade it was there real looking at the schedule I think just in general taking into consideration that this but you know just been flirting looks like it's going to be extended longer than anybody was planning are hoping to what I was thinking again neither of us know yet but my guess is that like she said since this was something sent to every grade level not just V that I think Administration is looking to build a little more consistency across grade levels and that is just a guess I don't know but it's my thinking so as mrs. Fisher said we're waiting alongside you to hear from Mr neuenschwander to hear from dr. Murphy to see how they're hoping that this is implemented thank you yeah but just know that that you know where we are in full commitment to do what's best for students and you know as much as we would like to know the suit more weed you know he'll that were understanding enough to know that you know we are squeezing every little bit out of them and this extra time you know if it is at will definitely be used for yeah to not ask for more material ask for more even more brain power maybe it's just a small group session or supportive whole group time to do in summer independent work so I hope that helps things that they're doing already if the school asks us to have them do them with us then we can do that we're not looking to add I have a question about I know we do the science lab is that every other Monday at 12:30 had plan I had planned this Lynn and I had planned on every Monday at 12:30 and then we've been asked that art is going to also be added to the Gradebook as it was like you know in previous years so with being sad the only way that we could fit art into the schedule without adding something you know a complete extra 45 minutes to their day is doing a rotation between science lab in art SoBe isn't that yes there are twill now rotate with science lab starting please tell me if I'm wrong do you think that right now we should all plan for science lab every month until we hear differently from Administration that art has been officially added back in or have we heard that art has been officially added I would say that because we can't and there's somebody I'd I know mrs. Bednar has ordered our apparently backordered so that's why we did our material pick up for next Friday to make sure that we have materials for both Science and Arts you know I they won't need their materials on Monday regardless are they are they meeting is embarrassing for me to ask you that I should be there at 12:30 and I'll to hear from this is better if it'll be art or science lab I have a lab plan but I know mrs. Bednar was also looking forward to introducing you know meeting new kids getting them talk about what expectations are for Arts but also knowing materials haven't been passed out too many grade levels yet because they're waiting on orders so you know for now students to definitely plan on every Monday at 12:30 to have it printed out schedule he's printed out something so they exactly what materials will need to have ready and you know what day what Monday they have so they don't lose track but as far as this Monday because there's not materials being passed out prior to that for either science Library Arts you know it'll it'll be up to you know mrs. Bednar if I think that she had requested though that she's able to at least say hello to students and talk about you know what they are going to be doing for art but I fantastic science activity that doesn't require materials if for some reason that doesn't work out not answering my question I just wanted to know how we were going to handle scheduling of Aiden reminder yeah I print something out just because I don't know it's like even like for me at home with the recyclable schedule I don't know why I can't remember it is every other week for recycles so I just made up of spreadsheet and wrote it down the kids know what is going to happen that Monday and the overall idea of you know what they'll do a topic of what they'll be learning about I know mrs. Bednar her ideas are very creative and she's really a I need to get started you know it's difficult to coordinate material pick up that we limit those to as few as possible and on that note then let me know if I didn't answer your question specifically enough but on that note we put on the newsletter that's a week from today that Friday is going to be our next material pick up and it's it's going to be hopefully quite big there are science lab materials there's art materials mr. laundry probably has news first there's a new math book we have our novel for ELA and what they have requested for us to do with material pick up is and so we're still we're not interested in our days by canceling and resumes to be there that there are bins outside of the office and in the morning the office staff will pull the bins out and it'll have the grade level on it some of the other grades of already done this for this may be something you've already done and then the bins will be out there labeled at fifth grade and with a list of what you need everything should be in a bag you just grab and go and it'll be out there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then I'll pull the pin back inside the office just in case you're not able to make it on Friday I need to run back over Monday morning so pull the pin back out Monday morning and this is applicable for any grade level that's the system that they put in place for material pickups so hopefully next Friday convenience I got as much as we want to see the kids just the stuff make more sense being that it doesn't require you to be any place at a specific time that's when it's convenient for you to swing by school to pick it up and it's right outside the office I need to go in the gate that sounds good thanks okay did anyone else have any questions or concerns anything you can help you with I don't have my video on sorry you know where Drew gets it from now so sorry okay hey I just wanted to thank you guys for clarifying those extra minutes with us sorry if I cut out for a second in particular my household I like on the routine that works he's getting his grades up he knows what's expected of him so additional changes even the smallest we're stressing him out and him worrying and also we're in our household so both clarifying that you would if you had to use those minutes to support the asynchronous work that they would be doing right that's the not online instead of adding additional to them I'm very thankful as a parent and supporting them mentally academically all of that so I just want you to say thank you cuz I know you hear complaints and all that so I know you were lit up and admin was lit up my parents who are not happy about it and we're worried so thank you for clarifying that with us and using our minds yes no stress level increase allowed yeah definitely certainly by the way to use it to their benefit and you know they may be able to log off that day and and not have social studies or science be on their to-do list so it certainly could turn out to be a positive experience thank you again yes thank you I think that was our main goal for this week was just try to address any concerns you had about that unfortunately some of it is still out of our hands again that's what we're looking at if it does happen that's how we want to use it message history we have anything else I think I can't think anything more except you know we continue to enjoy your kids how much in their personalities are just shining through and you know if we had any kind of saying that we'd be back in our classrooms but because we can't lie so appreciate your support and the perseverance that these kids so I have no doubt and Mister laundry and I say it every year right after Christmas break the maturity that kicks in and their endurance it you know evolves and just a difference and 5th graders that come in from fourth grade and then you make that two second semester and it worried us-22 wonder will we see that this year because we're not as rigorous as we would be in the classroom and I think you all should feel so proud of your kids because they certainly have risen to the occasion putting in their effort giving us their best they're persevering the lessons that they're learning and I the maturity that they are showing is is admirable so thank you for all you are doing and certainly high fives and hugs to the kids because there their they're giving it their all is well thank you all again for coming and for your time this afternoon if you ever have any other questions or concerns please keep emailing us let us know have a great weekend and we'll see everybody next week thank you again
